Why the New Forest is the perfect summer escape

Step into the New Forest this summertime. There’s nothing better than soaking up the stunning scenery of the New Forest National Park in the summer months – from the vivid hues of purple given out by the carpets of heather adorning the heathland to the vibrant greens of the forest’s leaves.

Amazing wildlife

Summer in the New Forest is a special time of year, with chances to spot some of the newly born New Forest Pony foals and to listen out for the distinctive call of the nightjar at dusk.

Little ones will love going on nature walks for a spot of nature spotting, both of which you can do from our Harry’s Field campsites.

Another great pit stop for those interested in nature is to the New Forest Reptile Centre, near Lyndhurst. Here, you can learn more about the native reptiles and amphibians that call the New Forest home.

Explore the New Forest coastline

Arguably the lesser-known part of the New Forest, the coastline brings with it lots of opportunities for some traditional seaside fun.

Build sandcastles, or enjoy long walks at Lepe Country Park, take a dip in the shallow waters around the fossil beds at Barton on Sea or embark on a boat journey from the small coastal village of Keyhaven as you travel across the harbour to Hurst Castle, a Tudor fortress built by King Henry VIII.

With boat trips, boutiques and even its own sea-water baths, Lymington is another New Forest coastal gem. Watch the yachts bobbing on the water, go crabbing from the sea wall or stop in at one of the tea rooms for a good old cream tea.

Wherever you choose, there will be lots of chances for an ice cream or two!

Cool off under the forest canopy

If the days are a little too balmy for your liking, you can easily cool off under the forest canopy.

Take in some of the woodland walks on offer in the New Forest, from the Tall Trees Trail at Blackwater to the various walks available at Bolderwood (we’d also recommend a stop by at the deer viewing platform there too!).

Enjoy the great outdoors

Get away from screens and take in all the benefits of the great outdoors. There are plenty of different ways you can spend time outdoors in the New Forest.

Hire bikes from one of the New Forest’s cycle hire shops (found in Burley, Lyndhurst or Brockenhurst) and take in the views on two wheels. Pick from the variety of suggested walks available – the New Forest website is a great resource for selecting the walks that are right for you.

Learn new skills on archery sessions at Insight Activities or navigate the inflatable obstacle course at the New Forest Water Park – both are very close to our Harry’s Field campsite.

Of course, camping with us also provides plenty of time in the great outdoors as well. Sit around a firepit in the evening and recall your day’s adventures whilst toasting marshmallows, enjoy pizza from one of our visiting food trucks and do a spot of stargazing.

Family days out and events

There is plenty to see and do during the summer months in the New Forest. One of the highlights for families is a visit to Paultons Park. Here, you will not only find a variety of thrilling rides for older children, but little ones will love exploring Peppa Pig World.

Take a trip to Beaulieu with its National Motor Museum for an exploration into the history of motoring, hop aboard the miniature steam railway at Exbury Gardens or go in search of hidden fairy doors on a trip to Furzey Gardens.

You will also find plenty of events happening in the New Forest across the summer months. One of the biggest events is the New Forest & Hampshire County Show (28-30 July 2026) – with agricultural shows, live craft demonstrations, food stalls and much more. Other events often include family trails, live music evenings and summer fetes and fairs.
